Subject to funding, the intention is to translate residents‘ ideas captured in the graphic mural into a street art programme. This is likely to involve forming a Steering Group, creating project briefs for each street art location using the graphic mural and booklet as inspiration and promoting an opportunity for Coventry street artists
It was a humbling, moving and fascinating experience for the Project Management Team to witness the outpouring of personal stories from local residents. For some, it was clearly a cathartic experience. The number of people willing to talk about their Tile Hill memories and who wanted to help with Phase 2 perhaps illustrates how much people have felt disconnected from people in the present Covid-19 crisis and disconnected from the past. We hope Phase 2 can assist the healing process.
The first part of the project to add wall art to the brick wall on The Ponderosa took place in autumn 2021. Unfortunately, it proved difficult to identify a funder who would grant money for the work to be completed.
The Coventry Telegraph ran a story on the project in March 2022.
STOP PRESS: An anonymous donation has been gifted in order to allow the completion of the painting of the entire wall. Work began on the wall in late July 2023 with a mural of two boxers.
Work was then delayed for a couple of weeks due to rain. The wall-art artist, Michael Batchelor, began a mural depicting “Fighting Irish” on 3rd August. The painting depicts a boxer readying himself for his next fight and is based on an image used by local author Jamie McGough for his 2022 Belgrade Theatre play.
It is hoped that Michael will be joined by his team, the “Wall Art Strategy Team” shortly to complete the project. In order to make it easier for the Team, volunteers cut back the low brush alongside the wall.
Update (27th September 2023). Almost complete. However, due to the porosity of the bricks making up the wall, extra donations were sought in August from Precious Metal Deposits (PMD) which owns two-thirds of the Ponderosa Wall, for base coat paint to continue the work. Our grateful thanks for the donation which has enabled the brick wall to now become either black or grey.
